Spain tax calculator for expats: how much would I take home?
If you’re coming from a country with no income tax, as in the Gulf, you’ll be used to offers quoted as a monthly net figure. Spanish offers come as a gross annual figure, often split into payments, and the gap between the two surprises almost everyone. This calculator exists partly to translate between them.
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus two things: your Social Security contribution and income tax (IRPF). The calculator works both out for the year, then shows your net pay per payment.
Many Spanish salaries are paid in payments: one a month plus two extra ones, usually in summer and December. The yearly tax and Social Security are the same either way. Only the size of each payment changes, so check which of or your offer means.
How much Social Security do employees pay in Spain?
On a permanent contract you pay of your salary: for general cover, for unemployment, for training and for a pension reserve. On a temporary contract it is .
Contributions stop growing above a month. Above that, only a small solidarity contribution of to applies to the extra. We assume it reduces your taxable income like the rest of Social Security.
A full-time job has a minimum contribution base of a month. If your salary is below it, the calculator uses that minimum and tells you so.
How is income tax worked out in Spain?
Before any tax is applied, your salary is reduced in three steps. Social Security comes off first. Every employee then deducts for general expenses. Lower earners also get an extra reduction of up to , which fades out between and of net work income.
Two scales then apply to what is left: a state scale, from to , and your region’s own scale. Each applies to the whole amount, and together they make up your income tax.
The first part of your income is tax-free thanks to the personal allowance: at state level, rising to and in the older age bands. Children add for the first, for the second and more for the next ones. This allowance is taxed at the lowest rates, so it saves people with the same family situation the same amount, whatever they earn.
Salaries up to also get up to off the tax itself, fading out by .
Why does the region you live in change your tax?
Each region sets its own scale and, in some cases, its own allowances. The top regional rate is in Madrid and in Catalonia, for example, and Madrid’s personal allowance is rather than . So the same salary can leave you with a different net figure depending on where you live.
The calculator covers Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. The Basque Country and Navarre have their own income tax systems and are not covered.
Spain tax calculator : what does the estimate leave out?
This is an estimate of your yearly tax on a salary. Your employer withholds tax each month using a single national table, so your payslips will not match it exactly. The difference is settled in your yearly tax return.
It does not include regional deductions, such as for rent or school costs, or any other income or savings. It assumes you claim the full child allowance, not shared with another parent, and leaves out the extra allowance for very young children. It is for employees, so it does not cover self-employed workers (autónomos).
If you have just moved to Spain for work, you may be able to pay a flat rate instead under the Beckham law. Tick the box above to see your net pay that way, or use the Beckham law calculator to check whether you qualify.
